Google heads to Liverpool to work with SMEs
Search engine giant Google is opening a base in Liverpool as part of a bid to work with more local software developers.
A member of Google’s Developer Relations team is taking a desk at new hi-tech shared workspace DoES Liverpool – and has pledged to work closely with technology entrepreneurs in Merseyside and beyond to help them grow their businesses.
Paul Kinlan, “developer advocate” at Google, will be the latest resident at DoES, in Hanover Street.
The centre was created by a collective of entrepreneurs and freelances as a workspace for software developers, electronics engineers, and artists. Mr Kinlan will use DoES as a base from which to visit developers across the North West.
He also plans to hold events at the centre, and will be available to chat to Liverpool developers who want to talk about Google’s work.
Google’s Developer Relations team works with developers and businesses who want to create software to work on Google’s platforms.
Mr Kinlan’s aim is to help create a “thriving ecosystem of third party applications” that work with products such as the Chrome browser and Google Maps.
He said: “We’re looking to go where the developers are, and this will give us the chance to start working more closely with developers and businesses in the north of England.” Adrian McEwen, one of the team behind DoES, says the workspace is “a mixture of office and 21st-century workshop”.
It provides desks where entrepreneurs can work alone or alongside other tenants.
DoES will also be used to host events such as GeekUp Liverpool – a networking and social event for developers.
Mr McEwen said: “Although rather different from our usual mix of startups and freelances, there’s a great fit between Google and DoES Liverpool: we both want to find and help local start-ups.
“It’s a great opportunity for all involved – DoES, Google and the North West.
“We’re very excited for what it means for local developers.”
