LFC managing director scores with Liverpool Alumni at the Embassy

The man for responsible for spearheading Liverpool FC’s activity off the field told an audience of people who had all kick-started their business careers in the city of his plans for the club’s future.

Speaking at Liverpool’s embassy in London, Ian Ayre, Liverpool FC managing director told more than 60 alumni from Liverpool’s three universities that the team’s current visit to China formed part of a particular strategy.

He said that the Asia market is viewed as a key growth area for the club but that they have to adapt the product accordingly: “A Liverpool fan in China needs a different approach to a Liverpool fan in Liverpool.”

He also said that while looking after their own business concerns the club would help as much as it could in regeneration plans for North Liverpool.

In a wide-ranging presentation on the “Business of Football” he covered the importance and latest methods for monitoring players' fitness and performance when making signings; the interdependence of success on the field and commercial success; the background to the Standard Chartered deal; the breakdown of LFC income and expenditure; the challenges of managing a global brand and how to understand and open up new markets.

He also revealed that Liverpool’s new ‘third’ kit is their biggest selling third kit ever, despite having blue in it.

Mr Ayre added: “My prime motivation is obviously to grow the commercial success of Liverpool Football Club, but working with Liverpool Vision on an event like this gives me a welcome opportunity to showcase the city more widely and to be proud of some of the things my home city has achieved over the years.”

The alumini, ranging from lawyers to new media executives as well as sports professionals, were impressed according to Tony O'Neill, Head of Business support at Liverpool Vision.

He said: “This event was oversubscribed, demonstrating again what an asset our football clubs are in helping us to market the city.

“A number of our local graduates are now highly influential business people in the capital, and we were able to demonstrate to them the city's strengths as a prime business location.”

Nick Smith, Vice President New Media, Momentum Pictures, said: “Although I still visit Liverpool regularly and see the changes taking place, I was taken aback by the scale of the economic improvement in the city.

“Clearly both the football club and the city generally have well founded optimism for the future.”
