Liverpool artists to benefit from dot-art Services training scheme

A social enterprise has launched its first series of training courses for artists as part of its missions to grow the region’s visual arts sector.

Not-for-profit company dot-art Services was set up last year by Lucy Byrne, founder of Liverpool gallery dot-art. It works to help artists develop their careers and gain more exposure for their work.

Its courses, which start this month and run until September, include daytime training courses and evening “meet the buyer” events.

The daytime courses are designed to give artists the skills they need to win contracts and sell their work.

Subjects will include Social Media for Artists and Setting Up as a Self Employed Artist. Courses will also cover practical skills, such as how to photograph works of art.

The courses have been backed by creative industries support agency, Merseyside ACME.

Ms Byrne said: “For some time we have been receiving requests for help with a wide range of practical issues facing artists, and I hope this will be the first of many training programs in response to these needs.”

Dot-art Services works through a membership system. Artists who subscribe get benefits including their own web page, exhibition opportunities, PR opportunities and access to networking events.

Ms Byrne said: “dot-art Services is the artist support side of what we do.

“They get access to the opportunities that we generate through the commercial side of things, such as sales and exhibitions.

“We’re trying to offer bespoke, tailored training to visual artists which isn’t out there at the moment. It’s about upskilling people and helping them find opportunities for employment.

“For example, people sometimes ask us to find artists to work with a school or a community group.

“We want to provide the right artists who have the right skills – so we will have a course on working with community groups.”
