Liverpool chamber makes investment case

The Liverpool Chamber of Commerce has taken a high-profile delegation to the city's London Embassy to make the case for the proposed high-speed rail plans (HS2), Liverpool Waters and the Northern Hub.

Consultation on the government’s HS2 proposals ends on 29 July and the chamber said it was keen to show a "united voice" from the north in support of the 'yes' campaign.

Maresa Molloy, the chamber's head of policy and information, added that the organisation was keen to articulate the business case to government for infrastructure improvement initiatives.

Greengauge 21 director Jim Steer, a campaigner for HS2 and part of the visit to London, said: "A new high-speed rail network would transform the country’s economic geography, bringing cities closer together, enabling businesses to be more productive and support much needed employment, growth and regeneration, delivering long term sustainable growth."

The Northern Hub, meanwhile, will allow faster and more frequent rail services between cities in the north. Insider is behind the plans.

At the meeting, Graham Botham of Network Rail presented details of the scheme which includes a 40 per cent increase of in trains a day across the region, a total of 700 extra services providing capacity for a further 3.5m passengers a year and quicker, more frequent service between Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield.
