Liverpool Chamber of Commerce helps Government with riots response
Liverpool Chamber of Commerce has helped the Government prepare a range of measures to help businesses affected by the recent civil unrest.
It was one of the Chambers that was contacted by the COBRA Committee – set up to respond to national emergencies – and provided a briefing on business concerns and reaction for the Home Secretary, Theresa May, and the Minister for Business and Enterprise, Mark Prisk.
In response, the Government announced its £20m “High Street Support Scheme” for local firms and communities.
It is working with local enterprise partnerships (LEPs), local authorities and business organisations to ensure that affected businesses have access to practical advice, information and support to help them recover as quickly as possible.
A range of advice has also been made available on issues such as insurance, business rates, tax, and access to bank finance.
Jack Stopforth, Liverpool Chamber of Commerce chief executive, said: “The events of this week have convulsed city and town centres across England, leaving many businesses counting the costs of clean-up and repairs.
“We can only hope that the unprecedented and wanton violence and looting do not have lasting effects on the retail sector, the UK’s tourism industry, and our reputation as a secure and profitable destination for overseas investment – especially at a time when businesses are working tirelessly to nurture our still fragile recovery.”
