Liverpool gets set for Sound City conference
Some of the biggest names in the music and technology worlds are heading to Merseyside this week for the Liverpool Sound City conference.
As well as a programme of gigs by artists from Cast to The Kooks, Sound City features a music business convention at the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool One on Thursday and Friday.
It will debate issues from technology and record labels to merchandising and the music press.
Convention director Jon-Paul Waddington said: “It’s a two-day convention, but with the ideas we have at the start of the year we could do a week. It’s the hardest part of my job to take all the ideas that we’ve had and find what works and what doesn’t.
“But I’m happy with it all now. It’s representative of the most creative and digital activities at the moment.
“The people we’ve got speaking are at the top of their games.”
On Thursday, the keynote speakers will be New Order and Joy Division bassist Peter Hook and music photographer Kevin Cummins. They will share the stage at the Hilton.
Mr Waddington said: “They’ve got a very interesting relationship – if there’s one event where you would bet there’s going to be fireworks, it’s that one.”
As well as the App Panel (see right), Thursday will also see an App Keynote speech delivered by Last FM founder Michael Breidenbruecker.
Other subjects up for discussion will include the future of record labels.
On Friday the keynote event will see Simon Raymonde, founder of record label Bella Union and former member of Cocteau Twins, discuss the state of the music industry with Eric Pulido, guitarist with the band Midlake.
