Liverpool opens diplomatic relations with international ambassadors
His Excellency, the Ambassador from Lithuania, and the Chief Executive of the China Britain Business Council (CBBC) recently headed up a list of distinguished guests at a special international event at Liverpool’s London Headquarters.
There were also senior representatives from Canada, Spain, Slovakia, Switzerland, Chile, Cuba, Croatia, Ghana, Indonesia, the Czech Republic, Korea, Hong Kong, Poland, Portugal, Norway, China, Thailand, Latvia, Poland, Mexico and Namibia at the event, held on the 18th May 2011.
H.E. Oskaras Jusys from Lithuania and Stephen Phillips from CBBC joined other guests at a series of presentations on what Liverpool has to offer in business, culture and education and encouraged to think ‘Liverpool’ when considering UK locations for trade and business links.
Also in attendance were Gunveena Chada, UK Head of Confederation of Indian Industry and Andy Lam, deputy director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office.
Cllr Nick Small, Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for employment and skills, who hosted the event, said: “As the newest member on the diplomatic block, we wanted to introduce ourselves and we used the event to cement existing international friendships and forge new friendships, many with emerging cultural and economic markets.
“We also wanted to make these influential people in the international community in London aware of the opportunities in Liverpool and promote the fact that Liverpool is only just over two hours from London, that we are a cultural capital, frequently visited by a wide range of overseas delegations and a great place to work, invest, study and live.”
The Liverpool Embassy, at New Broad Street House close to Liverpool Street, EC2, and the financial district, has been set up following the success of Liverpool’s presence at the World Expo in Shanghai last year. It showcases the vision to continue to develop Liverpool as a business-friendly and innovative city to invest in.
So far the embassy, which opened in the heart of the capital’s financial district on January 21, has welcomed more than 350 visitors, dealt with more than 200 enquiries and held more than 90 business meetings.
In addition, eight events have been held showcasing the best of Liverpool in a range of sectors, including financial and professional services and creative and digital excellence and an international meeting with representatives from other London-based international embassies.
