Liverpool’s Ropewalks shortlisted for national architecture award

Liverpool's Ropewalks quarter has been shortlisted for a national architectural award.

The area, which takes in the area around Bold Street through to Duke Street, is in the running in the Georgian Group Architectural Awards.

It has been shortlisted for the “Restoration of a Georgian Building in an Urban Setting” category, recognising the council’s work “to rescue and restore disused and derelict Georgian properties.”

The shortlisting committee added: “Several properties in Seel Street, a notoriously derelict Georgian street with numerous buildings at risk, have been externally restored.”

The organisation behind the awards added the council had been commended for its work to bring in grants for renovation, and also its efforts to enforce against building owners who leave their properties to fall into disrepair. Regeneration cabinet member Cllr Malcolm Kennedy said there was still work to be done in the area, but added: “It’s great news. It shows the strength of Liverpool’s heritage, and the Ropewalks has been one of the success stories of the last few years.”
