Mersey River Festival line up includes Beverley Knight, RAF and tall ships
The full line-up for the Mersey River Festival was revealed last night, including a free outdoor concert by soul singer Beverley Knight, an RAF fly-past and Tall Ships.
Visits by two majestic liners will start and conclude the celebrations.
On September 8, the new Queen Elizabeth cruise liner will make her inaugural visit, while her departure later the same day will be marked by a spectacular firework display.
A week later on September 15, the largest transatlantic ocean liner in the world, Queen Mary 2, will sail into Liverpool’s cruise liner terminal for the day.
Another highlight will be a free concert by Mobo award-winner Beverley Knight at the Pier Head on September 10, starting at 7.30pm.
From September 8 to 10, a total of 11 Tall Ships, including The Phoenix, which was featured in an episode of Dr Who, will give visitors the opportunity to experience life on board.
The waterfront will also come alive with aerobatic displays, street theatre, a bistro village and rustic farmers’ market, while swing and jazz sounds from the 1930s will feature on the Big Band stage.
The river festival is part of the On The Waterfront programme of events taking place over the summer, which included the stunning 3-D light show at the Liver Building which drew huge crowds last month.
Cllr Wendy Simon, Liverpool Council’s cabinet member for culture and tourism, said: “The Mersey River Festival was always hugely popular and attracted hundreds of thousands of people every year. Since the last festival took place in 2005, our iconic waterfront has been transformed and is now looking more majestic than ever.
“The river festival will be a great occasion to showcase it to visitors from all over the world.
“This year’s event will be just as popular as it has something to suit all tastes, from soul music to sailing.”
Among the events is the finale of the P1 SuperStock Championships, which will see brand-new racing boats hitting the River Mersey on September 10 and 11. Other watersports on offer include wakeboarding and canoeing.
Also giving free concerts during the week-long festival are Beatles tribute band Made In Liverpool on September 11. The following evening will see performances from Liverpool Shanty Kings and the 70-strong Liverpool Community Choir, which will entertain audiences with songs from the 1920s up to the present day.
