Merseyside restaurants win BBC Olive magazine’s Alternative Restaurant Awards
Two Merseyside eateries were given BBC Olive magazine’s Alternative Restaurant Awards 2011.
Michelin-starred Wirral restaurant Fraiche and fashionable city centre teashop Leaf were both singled out for praise in the awards, which aim to celebrate Britain’s unsung food heroes and best value places to eat.
Natalie Hayward, 29, who owns Leaf, said: “We were so surprised – we had no idea. This has been a great year for us.
“We only moved over from Upper Parliament Street to Bold Street last November and to get an award like this so soon is fantastic.”
The judges named Marc Wilkinson as Britain’s Most Inventive One Man Band, describing his 14-seat Oxton restaurant Fraiche as “a revered gastronomic wonderland”.
They added: “Wilkinson’s ability to single handedly conjure a stream of jaw-dropping avant-garde dishes for his guests is remarkable.”
