Morrissey to help find Liverpools next Loach


Liverpool-born BAFTA nominated actor and director, David Morrissey will be a judge of an exciting film-making competition as part of the ground-breaking ‘it’s liverpool’ campaign. The ‘it’s liverpool on film’ competition aims to uncover the hidden treasures of Liverpool through the eyes of its residents and visitors, encouraging people to think creatively about the city.

The films will be shortlisted following a public vote and a judging panel, headed by David Morrissey, will judge the shortlisted finalists. A top cash prize of £1,000 is on offer for the film judged to be a gold award winner, £500 for silver, £250 for bronze and a £250 People’s Choice award for the most viewed film on YouTube.

Actor and Director, David Morrissey said: “Film making isn’t just the preserve of people who have been to film school, anyone can pick up a camera and make their story ideas come to life. With new technology like mobile phones and HD flick cams, film making is quicker and easier than ever.

“We want to find and hear new voices and to see new and surprising aspects and images of Liverpool – I encourage everyone, young and old, film makers and complete novices to sign up and have a go.”

Since its launch in September, it’s liverpool has been a hit with local businesses, cultural and educational organisations and city residents and social media users as people share their love of the city and use it’s/i’m liverpool through a variety of marketing and communications. The campaign is reaching beyond the city and has a following as far afield as Asia and Australia thanks to its use of social media.

The ‘it’s liverpool on film’ competition is part of the next phase of the campaign which encourages people from all walks of life to create original content, share it with the world and show what the city’ unique offer.

The competition will be open for entries from 14 November until 12 December 2011 and is being organised by Liverpool Film Office and Liverpool Vision, the city’s economic development company, which is leading the it’s/I’m liverpool campaign.

Lynn Saunders, Liverpool Film Office manager, said: “We’re so lucky to have someone of David’s calibre as part of a really strong judging panel with wide experience which is a testament to the aims of the it’s liverpool campaign.

“Liverpool has a rich cultural heritage and a great pool of talent just waiting to be uncovered. We hope that through it’s liverpool on film we can give some up-and-coming film makers a chance to share the limelight with established industry talent.

The full judging panel consists:

• Jon Corner: Visiting Fellow, School of Arts, University of Liverpool, Director for Mediacity UK at University of Salford, Chairman of River Motion Group, Liverpool
• Judith Jones, Director of Liverpool John Moores University’s Film School
• Phil Halpin, Owner/co-founder Mocha, who created the it’s liverpool campaign film
• Lynn Saunders, Manager, Liverpool Film Office

Lynn Saunders added: “Liverpool is the most filmed in the UK outside of London, but we want it to be seen through different eyes. The films can be funny, beautiful, sad, poetic, inspiring, musical, challenging or unconventional as long as it’s Liverpool.

“It doesn’t matter if entrants have never made a film or even held a camera, because we want to hear new voices and see images and aspects of Liverpool that are original, personal and surprising.”
