Places available on first Liverpool transatlantic tall ship voyage for more than 100 years

A once in a lifetime chance to sail on a tall ship transatlantic voyage from Liverpool to the West Indies will take place this autumn.

For the first time in nearly a century fare-paying passengers will be able to cross the Atlantic on the three-masted barquentine Pelican sailing ship from the River Mersey.

The Pelican will depart with 28 passengers on the 80-day crossing from Liverpool to the West Indies on September 22.

The final part of the trip will be a 10-day cruise aboard this class ‘A’ tall ship amid islands featured in The Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Pelican’s rig is a modern adaptation of a “xebec”, which was a highly successful 16-17th century Atlantic pirate ship.

Pelican’s transatlantic crossing will take a southerly route calling at Lisbon, the Canaries, Morocco, Cape Verde Islands, the Caribbean islands of Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent & Grenadines and Windward Isles.

The voyage is split into three legs, so those with less time or cash to spare can still savour the experience.

Anybody aged from 18-80-years-old can apply to join the trip and no previous sailing experience is needed.

Cost of each transatlantic leg is £2,000 and the 10-day Caribbean leg is £1,000. Passage on the full voyage is £5,200. Flights are around an extra £400-500.

Jointly organised by Pelican’s owner Adventure Under Sail and MAST (Merseyside Adventure Sailing Trust), bursaries of up to 60% are available to those 25 years-old or younger applying.

For young people wanting a shorter tall ship trip Pelican will also make a Titanic Commemoration cruise from Weymouth to Liverpool, Belfast and back, on April 8-15.

She will be joined for the Liverpool-Belfast return leg by Liverpool-based tall ships Kathleen & May and Ruth carrying older passengers. Cost is £455 including transfer to Weymouth.

Pelican’s 2012 Liverpool schedule follows highly successful visits last summer organised with MAST. Day sails will run on April 18 and 19 from the Cruise Terminal, prior to taking part in Sea Odyssey for Liverpool’s Titanic centenary.

Jim Graves, MAST chairman, said: “This transatlantic voyage from Liverpool on an authentic tall ship offers the chance of a lifetime, particularly for youngsters.

"This should be a cause for celebration in Liverpool and it could be the start of something big for tall ships sailing from Liverpool to North America and the Caribbean.”

Ben Swain, Adventure Under Sail training and marketing director, said: “We were bowled over by our welcome in Liverpool last year and the help from MAST.

“We hope it’s the start of a long relationship between Pelican and Liverpool.”
