Travel Fair offers route to cleaner commuting and community cooperation
South Liverpool business people are to discover the rewards of collaboration and healthy travel at a Sustainable Travel Fair.
Following the recommendations of the award-winning travel plan for Estuary Commerce Park in South Liverpool, the Travel Fair will see representatives from the transport, health and environment communities to showcase their work and highlight the benefits of a sustainable, environmentally friendly and healthy lifestyle.
The fair at the Crown Plaza, Speke, on Thursday, June 2 from 12pm-2pm is open to the public and is specifically targeted at people who work in south Liverpool, particularly Estuary Commerce Park, Liverpool International Business Park, New Mersey Retail Park, and other local employment areas.
The Estuary Commerce Park travel plan, led by Liverpool Vision, the city’s economic development company, won the Travel Wise Award for best sustainable transport initiative at the Merseyside Transport Awards in December last year.
The plan, aimed at reducing single occupancy car use, increasing accessibility by all modes of travel and promoting better integration between organisations to find common transport and infrastructure solutions, was described by judges as “truly outstanding”.
Funded by Liverpool Vision and North West Development Agency (NWDA), transport consultants AECOM produced an area travel plan and a traffic study that considered local and strategic travel issues and opportunities.
Andy Wallace of Liverpool Vision said: “This is building on the plan that businesses on Estuary Commerce Park helped put together.
“We have a fantastic opportunity to make South Liverpool a more pleasant, less congested, and greener place to work.
“The Estuary Commerce Park Travel Plan lays down a framework strategy for employers and employees to work together to achieve common mutually beneficial solutions and we hope that this event will help to increase awareness of sustainable choices.”
Five hundred free daily travel passes from Arriva Buses will be available at the fair to encourage car commuters from nearby business parks to try public transport. Also representatives from Travel Wise Merseyside; Merseytravel; Liverpool PCT: Lightcliffe Honda, Halfords Cycle Store, and Slimming World among others, will have stalls to provide information, to answer questions, and in some cases, to offer demonstrations.
Visitors to the fair will also be able to register their interest in car sharing or public transport user clubs, and can be provided with personal public transport journey information if they wish.
Phillip Spick of Shop Direct Group, the chair of the Estuary Commerce Park Forum said the event is perfectly timed: “The great weather of late, combined with record fuel prices, has encouraged more people to take up cycling, discovering the freedom, health benefits and financial savings it offers.
“Advice will be on offer for choosing safer, quieter journeys to work and Arriva’s offer will enable individuals wishing to try out the bus the opportunity to get familiar with stops, services and regular timings.”
