World Museum Liverpool and Merseyside Maritime Museum shortlisted for awards
TWO of Liverpool’s museums have been shortlisted for prestigious national accolades.
World Museum Liverpool has been selected for the Museums and Heritage Awards’ Temporary or Touring Exhibition category for its show, Plantastic!
The Merseyside Maritime Museum is one of six venues going head-to-head for the Classic Award.
A spokesman for National Museums Liverpool, which runs both attractions, said: “We are thrilled to be shortlisted for these awards which are like the Oscars of the museum sector.
“The Merseyside Maritime Museum goes from strength to strength and is now welcoming more than one million visitors each year.
“Plantastic! looked at the wonder of plants and was a big hit with visitors young and old. In total, it attracted more than 310,000 visitors.”
The exhibition will be judged alongside major exhibitions including Diaghilev & The Golden Age of The Ballets Russes, which opened at London’s V&A last year, and The British Library’ s Evolving English: One language, many voices.
The Maritime Museum will compete against Acton Scott Historic Working Farm in Shropshire, Blackwell Arts & Crafts House in Cumbria, Mostyn Gallery in Llandudno, Kilmartin House Museum in Scotland and the Science Museum, London.
The Museums and Heritage Awards for Excellence celebrate best practice, attracting hundreds of entries.
This year’s judging panel include Diane Lees, Imperial War Museums director general, and Sam Mullins, director of London Transport Museum. In the Classic Award category they looked for evidence of continued growth and visitor interest in organisations established for 10 years or more.
Broadcaster Sue Perkins will announce the winners during a ceremony in Westminster on May 11.
